How about coffee?

Postby coffeemanAZ » Wed May 23, 2012 4:21 pm

I'm the owner of Press Coffee Roasters, I have a deep passion not only for coffee, but for educating people on coffee (and of course I LOVE food!). This is not an advertisement but an open invitation to answer questions, myths, subject matter and so on. I'd also like to get a group of people together to visit our roastery to do a full on coffee 101 and then a cupping, our version of truly tasting coffee. After this, I hope those that are truly passionate about things that are F & B, can also become better educated about coffee and make better decisions going forward, whether its here in Phoenix or while traveling. HAPPY Questioning!!!

Without trying to sound too pandering, I saw this title, and assumed it was asking for favorite coffee places, and I was going to say "Press"! You guys do a great job over there- I really love the coffee. This is probably asking a question that has no one answer, but what do you guys do different that makes it taste so much better than anything else? The beans? The way the beans are roasted or ground? A special brewing machine? I assume it's all of the above, but I dream of those cappuccinos you make...

Moving to town in just over a week and very much looking for a coffee place to call my new local favorite. Would definitely be interested in a visit to the roastery with cupping.

I visited Cartel while I was in town for my recruitment and I was quite impressed by the beans and roasts they had, though the crowd and single barista (nice enough and quite knowledgable) made the process of getting a simple pour over quite time consuming.

It appears Coffeman from Press disappeared.

Anyone have any opinions on other local Roasters?

Basically I'm looking for a place with high quality single origins as opposed to blends, mostly for French Press purposes. Someone making a nice quality (and fairly priced) blend for that office coffee pot would also be welcomed.

Cheers.

How about coffee?

I would recommend Cartel Coffee Lab or Royal Coffee (next to Red Door Spa in Biltmore Fashion Park) for high quality, single-origin beans.

Thanks Joel,

I've been to Cartel and liked what I saw. Will check out Royal, as well.

Press, currently with only one location (at Scottsdale Quarter) might be worth a visit. They roast their own single-origin beans. I'm not sure what their retail situation is, but check it out.

We've found Bergie's in downtown Gilbert to be great for bean selection - and they do their own roasting. Brian and his brother (Matt I think - never really dealt with him) run the place.

We have a DeLonghi Semi-Automatic Espresso machine - (Model # ESAM4400) we bought it about 6 years ago when we realized how much we were spending at Starbucks and how quick the payback would be. Never looked back and love getting new beans and blends from Bergie's. We brew just under a pound a week and are usually partial to Costa Rican, Guatemalan and occasionally some Papua New Guinea beans.

If you find yourself in the southeast valley its a great place to stop!

I've never tasted anything quite like the "Los Andes" blend I had served to me in a macchiato at Cartel this morning. It was probably more acidic than any coffee I've ever tasted, which might have been a bad thing if not for the intense chocolate flavor balancing the acid at the forefront. If you love the combination of chocolate and raspberries, I think this coffee would be perfect. In fact that's almost exactly what it tasted like, with perhaps a bit more nuance and complexity. I bought some beans and look forward to seeing how they translate into a home-pressed cup of coffee.

The one I went to was:
