Last Minute Lunch: The Stand, Tue 9/4 12:30-ish

Postby The Cosmic Jester » Tue Sep 04, 2012 11:44 am

After reading the board, I remembered I'd like to go check out The Stand around Alma School and Indian School, out on the Salt River reservation. I should get there about 12:30, give or take. Hope to see you there.

Of course you go on the day when the Doux Drop's home sick :-)

Looking forward to a report!

GAH!...and I'm just reading this NOW, after plans have been made elsewhere with a co-worker..

There's probably no seating there on the corner...but you could come to the Two Waters Complex which are the two 3-story buildings you'll be able to see from there (Longmore and Osborn to be exact). Anyway, you can park in guest parking right out front between the two big buildings and the Council Chambers...walk through the passageway and you'll see the Roundhouse Cafe...with indoor and outdoor seating...get yourself a drink, and eat in comfortable surroundings!

(Clarification: Two Waters is the name given to the government/administrative complex for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Roundhouse Cafe is our employee cafeteria, which is run by Aramark. It is open to the public, but it's not a foodie adventure...it's typical Aramark stuff. However, they DO make fresh tortillas every morning! :) Anyway, it's got a TV-sitting area, and then your basic cafeteria tables and chairs...and you will not feel weird or out of place there even if you're not an Employee or Community Member. Like I said, it's open to the public...)

This is a good suggestion, phxmacbear. I'm generally AOK with dining al trunko, but preferably not in triple digit temps :-)

RD version of the report: What I had was downright awesome, made even better by my being the only gringo there. Will return later in the week to try other stuff so I can do a more conclusive report.

Hot tip: If you order the red or green chili with the tortillas, it comes as a burro. The chili is pretty loose. As far as I can tell, the optimal way to eat it is to grab a spoon so you can eat the chili, then eat the tortilla as you empty it. Taking a bite of the burro when full will likely result in an impressive overflow.

Hey Cosmic Jester....was that you seated in the folding chair facing Alma School Rd wearing a red t-shirt?
(I drove past on my way to lunch)

Were they serving anything else besides the chilis and tortillas?

Yum...I can't believe I've never gone there for lunch.
You know, if you REALLY want adventure, that's not the only place selling food out here.
Drive through the community and you'll see houses with signs out front listing what's for sale. 8-)

I can't vouch for any of it, nor its safety per Maricopa County food handling standards...but I figure if you're on this board and you were already willing to drive onto the reservation to sit in a folding chair in a dirt lot to eat chili from a road-side stand made of tree branches, your sense of food adventure outweighs any of those concerns, right?!

Hey Dominic... Remember when you were trolling through Guadalupe trying to find good eats? THIS is what you were looking for. Let's go some time.
